Before the first debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump , polling numbers are looking disastrous for the Democratic nominee.

According to Gallup , 79% of Republicans are pleased with Trump as the GOP’s nominee for president, but only 42% of Democrats are content with Biden as their nominee. To put that into perspective, 64% of Democrats were satisfied with Hillary Clinton in 2016 and 84% were happy with Barack Obama in 2012. Furthermore, more than half of Democrats say that they would prefer another candidate, suggesting that many on the Left are still holding out hope for a last-minute surprise at the Democratic National Convention in August.

While Trump’s approval rating among Republicans has only dipped 2 points since 2020, Biden’s has crashed by 14 points among Democrats in the same period. Trump has benefited from not being in the spotlight, but Biden cannot hide from his disastrous policy record.

While neither Trump nor Biden is viewed favorably by a majority of voters, Trump’s favorability ratings are on the rise while Biden’s are reaching their lowest point since 2007, when most people were lucky enough to not know who he was. Trump currently has a 46% approval rating, while Biden is sitting at a dismal 37%. That is lower than Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s, who didn’t even qualify to make the debate stage.

Moreover, voters view Trump as being more presidential than Biden; 46% of adults think Trump has the leadership qualities and personality that a president should have, while only 38% think the same of Biden. Additionally, 67% think that Biden is simply too old to be in the White House, while only 37% say the same about Trump.

Beyond that, voters don’t align with Biden on public policy; 49% say they disagree with Trump on key issues, while 61% disagree with Biden on key issues — 93% of Republicans say they are ideologically aligned with Trump, while just 81% of Democrats say the same. Independents also prefer Trump’s policies by 12 points.

This trend was demonstrated in another poll that showed that 56% of people say Biden is too liberal, compared to only 44% who say that Trump is too conservative.

Ultimately, there is almost no good news at all for the incumbent president, who is trailing Trump in almost every poll that asks voters who they plan to vote for in November. It is particularly embarrassing because Trump’s numbers are historically bad as well.

There are still some areas of concern for the Trump campaign, however, as expectations are so low for Biden’s performance at the debate that if he has no major blunders, he could be seen as the winner. Also, Election Day is more than four months away, so the trends in Trump's favor could reverse.

No one knows what is going to happen in November, so Republicans need to be careful not to become overconfident before ballots are cast.
