National Political Correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC, Steve Kornacki , pointed out on Thursday a recent string of polls showing President Joe Biden trailing his 2024 opponent Donald Trump by a “sizable gap” when it comes to favorability.

“3 polls released in the last 24 hours all show a sizable gap between Trump’s and Biden’s favorable/unfavorable ratings — a shift from most polls this year (and even the last few weeks), which have found little to no difference,” Kornacki posted online along with a table showing the latest polling from Quinnipiac, Gallup, and the NYT/Siena poll.

Quinnipiac has Biden with a 38/57 percent favorable to unfavorable split, a six-point gap behind Trump’s 44/51 percent split.

Gallup showed a bigger gap with Biden at a dismal 37/61 percent favorable to unfavorable split – a 24 point deficit for the incumbent. Gallup showed Trump with a 46/52 percent favorable to unfavorable split, a much more tame 6 point gap.
NYT/Siena poll showed Biden with a 38/59 percent favorable to unfavorable split, while Trump has a 46/52 percent split.

Quinnipiac has Trump leading Biden by 6 points in terms of favorability, while Gallup has Trump up 9 points, and the NYT/Siena poll has him up 8 – an all-around very poor showing for the incumbent months away from the election.

“The Quinnipiac and NYT/Siena polls were both conducted over the last week; Gallup’s was conducted from June 3-23,” added Kornacki of the timing of the poll.

Kornacki later replied to another X user who argued Trump has long led Biden in terms of favorability, “I’m not hyping it; I don’t know if it’s anything. But these are different than what we’ve mostly been seeing. The gap b/w their net favorables in Q is now 12 points. Previously this year it’s been 1, 7, 1, 1, and 3. In Gallup the difference is 18 points now; was 1 and 2 previously. And NYT/Siena was 6 in their last one, 15 now.”

As most voters are very familiar with both Biden and Trump, many pundits believe the election will come down to turning out the base and the current gap between the two candidates is a flashing red warning sign that Biden may have a much harder time getting Democrats to the polls than Trump will with Republicans.
