In a heartfelt roundtable discussion on BET’s “For The Fellas,” DDG, Nick Cannon, and Lance Gross opened up about their experiences supporting their partners through postpartum challenges. The conversation, moderated by host Brian “B-Mac” McIntosh, delved into the intricacies of fatherhood.

DDG Showcases The Power of Patience During Postpartum

DDG, the rapper and boyfriend of singer and actress Halle Bailey , shared his journey of supporting her. Bailey, who gave birth to their son Halo in December 2023, has been candid about her postpartum depression .

In a Snapchat video, she revealed, “I have severe, severe postpartum [depression], and I don’t know if any new moms can relate, but it’s to the point where it’s really bad, and it’s hard for me to be separated from my baby for more than 30 minutes at a time before I start to kind of freak out.”

DDG emphasized the importance of patience in their relationship, especially during such a vulnerable time.

“Just being patient man, just keeping that in mind when you’re going through something with her or maybe y’all might have a little disagreement or something or maybe we might butt heads here and there, but you know I try my best to be as patient as possible,” he shared.

This patience not only helped Halle but also strengthened his bond with their son.

“Even though he can’t talk, I feel like we got a connection where I’m able to make him laugh [and] smile. I feel like that’s my superpower as a dad,” DDG added.

Nick Cannon’s Nontraditional Family Structure

Nick Cannon, father of 12, spoke about the criticism he faces due to his nontraditional family structure. Despite the backlash, Cannon remains focused on providing a stable and loving environment for his children.

“I don’t owe anybody an explanation of how I father except for my children. And [as] long as the connection is there for them, as long as they’re happy with their father, it’s not going to be traditional,” he stated.

Cannon’s extensive family includes children with multiple partners, yet he ensures each child feels loved and supported. His approach to fatherhood is rooted in unconditional love and open communication.

“We gonna go through some stuff, but one thing every single one of my children knows is that I love them, unconditionally,” he said.

Lance Gross on the Legacy of Fatherhood

Actor and model Lance Gross shared how the legacy of his late father, who passed away in 2017, influences his approach to parenting. Gross, who has two children with his wife Rebecca Jefferson, emphasized the importance of being present and active in his children’s lives.

“I try to be at least a high percentage of what my father was,” he said.

Gross highlighted the significance of community and support among fathers. He often leans on close friends for advice and encouragement.

“We always hop on the phone if we need advice from each other or if we’re going through something…so it’s shoulders to lean on. All of us want well for each other,” he explained.
