Former President Donald Trump articulated his position on abortion at Thursday night’s presidential debate, justifying it by explaining that “you have to get elected.”

After fielding a question from Dana Bash about whether he would seek to ban the use of abortion pills, Trump answered in the negative, indicating his support for a recent Supreme Court decision to that effect.

He went on to note that Roe v. Wade returned the question of abortion to the states and to express his support for abortion access in the cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is endangered.

“Like Ronald Reagan, I believe in the exceptions. I am a person that believes, and frankly, I think it’s important to believe in the exceptions. Some people — you have to follow your heart — some people don’t believe in that. But I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother,” he said. “I think it’s very important, some people don’t — follow your heart — but you have to get elected also. And because that has to do with other things, you got to get elected.”
