Today is the day we finally learn if Iowa's 6-week abortion ban is legal

6 weeks or 20 weeks?

After months of waiting, the Iowa Supreme Court announces its highly awaited decision this morning on whether the state's "fetal heartbeat" law — which bans abortions after about six weeks, before many women know they're pregnant — is legal.

If not, then the state's current 20-week abortion limit remains law.

The political fallout from this ruling will be immense and could have an impact on the general election this fall. The Register will have a team of reporters providing breaking coverage of the ruling, the impact, the reaction and the next steps.

Trouble in Jamaica

It's not often you see Jamaica in the news in Iowa, but Reader's Watchdog Lee Rood has a doozy of a story on Iowa officials trying to get a Iowa teen girl out of a Jamaican boarding school accused of abuse.

The case has caught the attention of the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Iowa's Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson from Iowa's 2nd Congressional District.
