Kentucky lawmakers are reacting after the first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump on Thursday night.

CNN hosted the debate in its Atlanta studio, which sparked fiery conversation over issues such as immigration, abortion and inflation. The rematch between the two candidates came at a unique time, as neither has been formally nominated yet.

In Kentucky, Biden pulled 67.7% of Democratic primary voters, and Trump pulled 84.9% of Republican primary voters in the May election.

Some Kentucky Republican lawmakers criticized Biden's performance during the debate.

Republican Sen. Rand Paul got creative with his comment on X, formerly known as Twitter, and said about halfway through the debate that Biden should be "put out of his misery."

Meanwhile, Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams referenced a future Gov. Andy Beshear presidential candidacy in his reaction, signaling he thought the debate was a mess.

State Sen. Whitney Westerfield, R-Fruit Hill, criticized both candidates and called the debate a mess throughout the night.

"The Dems should be ashamed for letting this poor old feeble man run unchallenged. The GOP should be ashamed they didn’t kick their guy out of the running years ago. Both men should be ashamed their egos stopped them from bowing out on their own. Heaven help us," Westerfield wrote.

After the debate, the Republican Party of Kentucky posted on X and named Trump the debate's winner.

Kentucky Democrats also weighed in to support Biden.

Democratic Rep. Morgan McGarvey, who represents the 3rd District, posted on X in support of Biden and said he would bring a better future for the country.

Colmon Elridge, chair of the Kentucky Democrat Party, criticized Trump's comments on the border crisis.
