STURGEON BAY - For a second straight year, local construction and design company PortSide Builders, Inc. won a statewide award for a home it custom designed and built in Door County.

PortSide received the Badger Craftsman Award from the Wisconsin Builders Association in the category of Best New Home, $500,000 to $750,000. This is the third year for the awards, for which the association's 4,000 members are invited to submit their projects for consideration in one of 14 different categories, with members and the public voting for their top choices. The award was announced June 19 at the WBA Celebration of Housing event in Wisconsin Rapids.

The home for which PortSide won this year's award is a 2,701-square-foot, two-story, modern Craftsman-style home with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a study and a 457-square-foot covered back porch with a custom-built swing.

The owners approached PortSide with the initial design idea but had concerns about the challenges of their scenic yet sandy, rugged lot of cedar and evergreen trees, a press release from PortSide said. Custom home designer Alan Shefchik was able to incorporate their ideas into a plan that works with the lot's natural characteristics.

The great room features sliding glass patio doors and large windows to provide lots of natural light, a fireplace with stone-tile face and full wood surround, custom maple floating shelves, and crown molding.

The kitchen features more custom maple in the white cabinetry with smart storage solutions. There also is an island with an apron-front undermount sink, quartz countertops in black, custom wood hood above the range, white ceramic subway tile backsplash, and a prep kitchen or butler's pantry with matching lower cabinetry and countertop and open shelves above.

Behind double doors, the primary suite includes custom bookshelves and wood bench with storage in the bedroom, dual walk-in closets, a full bathroom with custom dual vanities that have quartz countertops, a custom-tiled walk-in shower, and large soaking tub with a chandelier above.

PortSide's Badger Craftsman Award last year was in essentially the same category, for Best New Home Design and Construction, $500,000 to $750,000. That was for a custom-designed and -built home situated on a private peninsula on the shore of the bay of Green Bay in Southern Door County that includes panoramic views of the water and surrounding landscape from nearly every room in the house.

“We are thrilled to win the Badger Craftsman Award for the second year in a row," Shefchik said in the press release. "It is an honor to be recognized alongside some of the best in the state. We would especially like to thank all the talented craftspeople who helped build this home.”
