Crazy Town frontman Shifty Shellshock died earlier this week and the cause has now been confirmed .

The voice behind the smash hit 'Butterfly' sadly passed away on June 24 at the age of 49. Howie Hubberman, the band's manager, opened up to PEOPLE about the role drugs played in his untimely passing.

Hubberman said: " Seth Binzer , after struggling with addiction and Crazy Town's rapid success with 'Butterfly,' never was able to reach out on a more successful level to deal with his addictions. We all tried, but ultimately we all failed, or Shifty would still be here."

Elaborating further, he added: "The cause of death was a combination of prescription drugs and street purchased drugs. Shifty was a friend and really wanted to get himself fixed - unfortunately no one had the exact tools to do this, myself included."

Although the cause of death has been shared by those close, official word from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner is pending as they await toxicology report results. Binzer's fight against drug abuse was publicly known, featuring on reality shows like Celebrity Rehab 1 and 2 and Sober House 1 and 2.

His struggles saw him hospitalized in 2012 after he fell into a coma, though he later recovered. In recent months, Binzer spoke about his sober journey and inner battles.

Taking to Instagram two months prior, he expressed: "I'm a lover than a fighter ...but the one I need to love more Instead of fight with is myself .. mr shifty true Love # Sober alive and grateful (sic)".

He first crossed paths with Bret Mazur, 53, co-frontman of 'Crazy Town', in 1992, and they initially named their duo Brimstone Sluggers. In 1999, they established Crazy Town, and were set to tour as part of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne's Ozzfest the following year, but Binzer found himself under arrest after hurling a chair out of a window while under the influence.

Their hit single 'Butterfly', released in 2000, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and claimed the number one spot in several other countries including Austria, Denmark, and Norway. The song samples 'Pretty Little Ditty' from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1989 album 'Mother's Milk', leading to the group being credited as songwriters.

Their debut album, 'The Gift of Game', sold over 1.5 million copies. However, their 2002 follow-up 'Darkhorse' didn't perform well, leading to their split.

They reunited in 2007 and returned to the stage in 2009. Their third album, 'The Brimstone Sluggers', was released in 2015.
