Arne Slot told Liverpool transfer is 'no brainer' after being offered bargain summer deal

Ex-Liverpool ace Glen Johnson believes the potential signing of Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich should be a “no brainer” for the Reds.

The German international, who can play right-back and in midfield, has just one year left on his Bayern deal, leading to reports he could be sold by the Bundesliga side this summer.

And Johnson reckons the addition of Kimmich to Arne Slot’s squad would provide Liverpool with a massive boost. “Yes, absolutely, especially if he’s available for a cut-price fee,” Johnson told Betfred when asked if t would be a good move.

“He’s played for a top club and won everything that there is to win. These players are hard to come by, so if you can get him for less than you’d usually have to pay, then it’s a no brainer. They should do whatever they can to sign him.”

Johnson's comments come amid reports Liverpool has been offered the chance to sign Kimmich. According to Mundo Deportivo , the Reds could step up interest in an attempt to pip Manchester City, Arsenal and Barcelona to his signature.

Kimmich is currently playing a starring role for Germany at EURO 2024 and his versatility means it would be interesting to see where he would feature for new Reds boss Slot.

In Trent Alexander-Arnold , Liverpool already has a versatile defender capable of stepping into midfield in possession, allowing the Reds star to influence the game in the middle of the park.

While Kimmich can play in midfield, last term he was not fully trusted to play there by outgoing boss Thomas Tuchel, who instead opted to start 20-year-old Aleksandar Pavlovic over the 29-year-old during Bayern’s run-in.

Additionally, Bayern pushed hard last season to try and bring in Fulham’s Joao Palhinha to protect their defense, emphasising just how much Tuchel preferred to play Kimmich at right-back. In bringing in Kimmich, the Reds might create more problems for themselves.

With Alexander-Arnold a lock to start at right-back for Slot, albeit with his position likely to change when Liverpool are in possession, would it make sense for the Reds to fork out decent money for a 29-year-old defender who might not start?

That will be the question Michael Edwards and company need to consider should they move to bring Kimmich to Merseyside. Liverpool’s squad is already crowded with midfielders and it remains to be seen how Slot will look to utilise those players come the start of the new Premier League campaign.
