Record travel despite people complaining they can't pay their bills

Americans' fears about the economy are everywhere in the news lately with many people saying they can't afford the basics like food, housing, insurance and utilities.

At the same time, people are taking vacations in droves.

The Transportation Security Administration says they have never seen more people taking to the skies, and expects that trend to continue.

"On Sunday, June 23, TSA broke the all-time record for most people screened nationwide on a single day, screening 2.99 million people at 434 airports," the agency posted. "TSA anticipates breaking another record for the number of passengers screened on Friday, June 28. With record numbers of people traveling."

UNO Economics and Finance Chair Walter "Dub" Lane says people are struggling financially, but they still feel a need to travel.

"We are still recovering from COVID, and people were locked up for two years and could do anything,  and the interest in roaming a little bit is still with us," the professor told WWL First News.

Lane says in order to afford those vacations, people are turning to credit cards.

"What we have seen is consumer borrowing is way up... and I think that's where it is coming from."

He advises that if you are going to take a trip, make a plan and set a budget.
