The first round of the 2024 Wimbledon men's singles tournament starts Monday as third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz enters as the co-favorite. The 21-year-old from El Palmar, Murcia, Spain, won the 2024 French Open and has victories at Wimbledon last year and the 2022 U.S. Open. A young and up-and-coming field, however, will make things difficult as a number of players are expected to vie for the title. Among those is top-ranked Jannik Sinner of Italy, and second-ranked Novak Djokovic of Serbia, the veteran of the group.
Alcaraz and Sinner are the +175 co-favorites in the latest 2024 Wimbledon men's singles odds. Djokovic is close behind at +275, followed by Alexander Zverev (+1600) and Hubert Hurkacz (+1800). Fifth-ranked Daniil Medvedev of Russia and 60th-ranked Matteo Berrettini of Italy are both priced at +2000 to win this grand slam title. Before making any 2024 Wimbledon picks for the men's champ, you need to see who proven SportsLine tennis handicapper Jose Onorato is backing .
Onorato grew up playing competitive tennis in Caracas, Venezuela. After coming to the U.S., he trained with famed coach Nick Bollettieri at IMG Academy in Florida and faced players like Robert Farah, now one of the world's top-ranked doubles players.
Onorato, who holds dual degrees in finance and economics from the University of Miami, does extensive research before placing any tennis bets. He studies current form, players' tendencies on a particular surface, weather conditions and many other relevant factors. That systematic approach has helped Onorato go 168-106-8 (+107.12 units) since 2022. In the most recent grand slam tournament, the 2024 French Open, he correctly picked Iga Swiatek (-160) to win the women's title.
Onorato warns bettors to avoid Djokovic due to his coming off knee surgery and not having played since the fourth round of the French Open. Instead, he says there are a number of other options to consider. Alcaraz, the defending Wimbledon champion, looks to make it two Grand Slams in a row after capturing the French Open with a 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Zverev. Alcaraz, who is 1-1 on grass this year, was 12-0 on the surface last year and is 17-3 on grass all-time.
Sinner, who took over the No. 1 ranking on June 10, has been on a roll in 2024. Not only is he 5-0 on grass this year, he is 38-3 on all surfaces. He captured the Australian Open title this past January for his first Grand Slam title, and reached the semifinals at the French Open a couple of weeks ago. He also reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2023, and is 9-3 all-time in the tournament.
Another player that is expected to make some noise is Zverev. The 27-year-old is already battle tested after reaching the finals of the French Open, and the semifinals of the Australian Open. He reached the finals of the U.S. Open in 2020, and has reached the semifinals or finals of eight Grand Slams. He is 3-1 on grass this year and is 36-19 on the surface since 2013.
