Sometimes the covers that fans latch onto the most are the ones they saw coming the least. I mean, it may seem a bit counterintuitive that an up and coming Americana artist, who has organically built their fan base upon brutally honest and painstakingly introspective lyricism, would decide to cover a lighthearted and mainstream pop song. But that's exactly what Nolan Taylor has been doing at his shows lately. The Cincinnati, OH area based songwriter has been known to cover some great music from time to time on social media, and even to a sprinkle a couple of killer covers into each live set he plays. One song that quickly became a fan-favorite at live shows was Colby Caillat's 2007 debut single and mega hit "Bubbly," a lighthearted love song that, whether people want to admit or not, everyone loves and knows the words to. I saw Taylor play a show a couple of months ago, and before I even really realized "Bubbly" was a cover he had been playing, several fans in the audience were yelling it out in hopes he played it. In the same set that he played many of his hard hitting originals as well as an awesome take on the Grateful Dead classic "Shakedown Street," Taylor played "Bubbly," and the crowd went nuts. And as a result of his fans' support in response to the cover, Taylor did us all a favor and decided to officially record his cover of the tune. Interestingly enough, though, Taylor insinuated in a recent post to Instagram that "Bubbly" started out as a fun, somewhat ironic cover at shows, that I imagine he never thought he'd ultimately record.
"Started playing 'Bubbly' almost as half a joke and half for real and if I'm being honest, the message behind this song is just beautiful so I was happy that so many of yall sing along to it live. Starting Friday (or midnight tomorrow) you can sing to it wherever you are. Full music video coming with it too. Love yall" https://www.instagram.com/p/C8sok1OR1J8/ Now go ahead and give Nolan Taylor's cover of Colby Caillat's "Bubbly" a listen below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2cjoj0LGnc I'm not ashamed to say it - this is an incredibly catchy, feel good song and it's been in rotation ever since I was reminded of it at Taylor's show. Originally written by Caillat alongside Jason Reeves, "Bubbly" was released as Caillat's debut single in 2007 and included on her subsequent debut album
Coco later that summer. Proving to be wildly popular, the song jumpstarted her career as a pop singer/songwriter and has since eclipsed 620 million streams on Spotify alone. Give the original a listen as well for reference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWGqoCNbsvM If you are somehow still unfamiliar with Nolan Taylor, he is an introspective lyricist with unassumingly potent vocals and a propensity for brutally honest song content that puts his own personal struggles and experiences on full display. With an incredibly endearing, authentic and all around likable personality shining through in his music and social media presence, fans all across the country have quickly bought into Taylor's powerful delivery of these tragic tales. Taylor, who is also extremely well liked and respected by his pears within the industry, began gaining serious traction when his song "68" experienced semi-virality through RadioWV's YouTube platform back in December 2022, but he's proved ever since that he has plenty more up his sleeve.
