I Need to Talk About My Favorite Pair from Netflix’s New Rom-Com ‘A Family Affair’ (and It’s Not Nicole Kidman & Zac Efron)

Having to work for someone (like the employers in Horrible Bosses ) is one thing. But to have said boss start dating your mom?! Oh, I wouldn’t be able to handle it. But that is the bizarre reality Zara (played by Joey King ) finds herself living in in the new Netflix rom-com A Family Affair , where her mom ( Nicole Kidman ) and her movie star boss ( Zac Efron ) enter into a surprising romance.

Though Efron and Kidman have some steamy moments as the main on-screen couple in the film, I need to talk about another pair that completely stole my heart: Zara and her best friend, Eugenie, who is played by YouTube star and actress Liza Koshy .

Although the two co-stars don’t have many scenes together, when they are seen on-screen, they are such a joy to watch. And it’s all thanks to King and Koshy’s genuine on-screen chemistry. In one scene, Zara calls Eugenie in the middle of the night to tell her about the moment she caught her boss and her mom together together. And it was hard not to laugh throughout the entire convo.

There’s even a scene where Eugenie gifts Zara with a star pin that reads “Bad Bitch” and it genuinely feels like a heartfelt moment between friends. But that doesn’t mean they have the perfect friendship. At one point in the film, Eugenie accuses Zara of being a bad friend because Zara makes “everything about herself” and doesn’t care about her feelings. Without giving too much away, even though they have a big argument, the two friends don’t give up on one another—and if that doesn’t show the complexities of friendship, then I don’t know what does.

A Family Affair is available to watch right now on Netflix .
