Earlier this week, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos delved into “things you should never say to your partner, according to therapists.” Today’s Live with Kelly and Mark saw the two keeping up that momentum with the following discussion topic: “Why you shouldn’t exercise with your partner, according to science.”

Ripa claimed that she and Consuelos have “exercised together and [they’ve] loved it,” but Consuelos had a tinge of hesitancy in his voice when he replied, “Yeah, I do love it, but —”

After Live ‘s EP Michael Gelman joked, “Just according to this article only,” Ripa quipped, “You just sound unconvinced that you love to.”

Consuelos assured Ripa that he does love working out with her, but highlighted that her workout is “much different” and “much harder” than his.

“If you plan on going for a run, and I believe this does work. We are a part of this study,” he explained. “It might be a good idea to leave your spouse at home, because we run at different speeds.”

Ripa confirmed that they run at different speeds, noting that Consuelos “runs fast” while she “like[s] to jog.”

Consuelos continued, “You know your way you want to go, and I always go the wrong way, and so we’re always doing this. But I do say that when we walk together or hike together, you are much faster. And I often ask you, ‘Can we just slow down?’ “

However, Ripa claimed Consuelos does not offer the same courtesy while on runs together.

“When you’re running, you don’t care. You expect me to keep up,” she teased.

While Consuelos admitted, “Yeah,” Ripa added, “Which makes it deeply unpleasant for me.”

“I run to sort of, like, think things through. I run to get a clear head,” she shared. “I listen to music. He doesn’t. He runs and doesn’t listen to music. He wants to have like, math discussions, and I’m like, ‘No, I’m running because I’m in a Madonna concert .'”

Consuelos chimed in, “Oh, that’s what it is. We can never communicate.”

Meanwhile Ripa told Live how she’ll be “on the stage doing choreography in [her] head.”

“In my fantasy brain, I’m in a fantasy world. So I’m running, but I’m running to the beat of the song,” she said. “He’s running like he’s running away from something. Something dangerous is behind us.”

Consuelos added, “On average, participants who exercise with their partner took 10,400 steps compared to 11,372 steps when they did it by themselves. So you slow down, or you have to compensate for your partner.”

Ripa summed up their running dynamic by saying Consuelos prefers to “go fast and short,” while she likes to “go long and slow.”

“So I’m right and you’re wrong,” she deadpanned, as Consuelos agreed that the study was “right.”
