Sean McDermott has an interesting relationship with the Buffalo Bills' fanbase.

He is polarizing to say the least, and this season will be very indicative on what his approval rating is from the fans going forward.

While McDermott helped take the Bills from laughing stock to perennial Super Bowl contenders, the Bills haven't made it to the AFC Championship Game since the 2020 season, and there have been multiple heartbreaking losses since then.

However, despite McDermott's shortcomings, he was still named as a top 10 coach in the NFL by PFF in their head coach rankings.

"Were it not for the late-season turnaround last season, there’s a good chance that I wouldn’t have gone with McDermott here," PFF analyst Gordon McGuinness wrote . "The Bills ranked third in the NFL with 0.104 EPA per play on offense in 2023 despite a coordinator change midseason. They actually dropped back a little when Joe Brady took over as interim coordinator but still ranked sixth from Week 11 through the end of the season. This upcoming season is a big prove-it year for McDermott, and he likely can’t afford for the Bills to start slow again like they did in 2023."

The Bills need to make a deep run in January and get back to the AFC Championship Game at minimum. It's no longer enough to just make it to the postseason - it's Super Bowl or bust.
