Body of missing London hiker, 70, found in Pyrenees by Spanish search team

Spanish police have found the body of a 70-year-old London man who disappeared while walking in the Pyrenees .

The man, who has not been named, was found at around 1pm Thursday after search teams including mountain rescue experts from Spain and France and Spanish civil guard combed the area around the western Pyrenees near Huesca and the Aragon Valley.

The alarm was raised on Monday after he set off on a climb and rescuers traced his whereabouts from coordinates off an SOS wristband he was wearing and used a helicopter to recover his body.

His death recalls that of Esther Dingley who disappeared while walking in the Pyrenees in November 2020.

Her remains were only found nine months later following extensive searches by specialist teams in France and Spain.

Meanwhile police on Tenerife are still searching for missing teenager Jay Slater after appealing for expert volunteers to help with a “massive search” on Saturday.

The 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared following an attempt to walk back to his accommodation on June 17.

On Friday, the Guardia Civil appealed for volunteer associations, such as firefighters, and individual volunteers who were experts in rugged terrain to assist in a “busqueda masiva”, or massive search, to take place on Saturday.

The Spanish police force said the search, which will begin at 9am in the village of Masca, near to his last-known location, would be coordinated to take in a steep rocky area, including ravines, trails and paths.

Mr Slater attended the NRG music festival on the island with two friends before his disappearance and his last known location was the Rural de Teno Park in the north of theisland – which was about an 11 hour walk from his accommodation.
