SMITHFIELD — With its bond request pared from $285 million to $120 million, the Johnston County Board of Education has had to cull its ambitions for new and renovated schools.

Most notably, a new or rebuilt Clayton High School is no longer in the proposed bond package, though County Commissioners have pledged to find another way to pay for that project.

But even with considerably fewer dollars, the Board of Education aims to touch more than 13 campuses if voters in November say yes to the borrowing.

    The $120 million would:

    • Renovate and build a classroom addition at Corinth-Holders Elementary School.

    • Build a classroom addition at Thanksgiving Elementary.

    • Renovate and build a classroom addition at Wilson’s Mills Elementary.

    • Renovate and build a classroom addition at McGee’s Crossroads Elementary School.

    • Demolish and rebuild a classroom wing at South Smithfield Elementary and make other renovations there.

    • Replace the heating and cooling systems at Four Oaks Elementary and Cleveland Elementary.

    • Replace obsolete farm alarm systems at the following elementary schools: Cooper Academy, Wilson’s Mills, Pine Level, East Clayton, West Clayton and Polenta.

    • Build a press box for the baseball and softball fields at North Johnston High School and resurface the track and tennis courts there.

    • Renovate and install a metal roof overbuild at East Clayton Elementary.

    • Make improvements to the heating and cooling systems at various schools.
