Talk about my two worlds colliding. This may be surprising to some, but the woman behind the keyboard of this article (when not listening to country music) loves a pop music moment. And if you have paid any attention to the pop scene, you probably know the name Chappell Roan. The redhead is taking the industry by storm with her outstanding vocals and lyrics that are slightly crazy in the best way possible. Roan has blown up in the last few months, with her recent Bonnaroo performance drawing an enormous crowd—so much so that the festival had to move her stage location after seeing the masses that showed up to her Gov Ball set in New York. https://twitter.com/haywiremagazine/status/1801236634370711699 Since discovering Chappell Roan, her single "Good Luck, Babe!" has been in constant rotation with me. The song's bridge is one of the hardest breakup verses I have ever heard, cutting listeners to the core.
"With your head in your hands, you're nothing more than his wife And when you think about me, all of those years ago You're standing face to face with "I told you so." You know I hate to say, "I told you so." You know I hate to say, but, I told you so.." When I thought I couldn't love this song more, Josiah and the Bonnevilles put his country take on the '80s synth-style single, dropping "Good Luck Babe." https://www.instagram.com/p/C8r4t-4OzFW/ Josiah has been known to lay down some great pop covers in the past, like the 1975's "Wintering" or Taylor Swift's "Anti-Hero." He compiled a collection of pop songs on his 2023 album Country Covers,
but this one might be my new favorite from his cover catalog. The acoustic cover highlights the lyrics in a new light, showcasing the good luck message to Roan's ex. Josiah's smooth vocals put a slight twang on the lyrics, but he still carries the powerful delivery of the original song in his chorus, further driving home the message. Josiah replaces the synth sounds with harmonica riffs, perfectly countrifying the single. Josiah knows how to write a dang good song, but he also knows how to lay down a dang good cover, and this is no exception. If you're a fan of Chappell Roan or "Good Luck, Babe," this one is a must-listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IEaklx4QLc
