Kansas Highway Patrol urges safe travel for Independence Day and summer

(KOAM) - As Kansans prepare to hit the road for Independence Day and the ensuing summer weekends, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) is emphasizing the importance of safe travel.

Many will celebrate by traveling across the Sunflower State, and KHP is urging motorists to prioritize safety during the busy holiday period and throughout the summer.

“Kansans will be traveling extensively over the 4th of July holiday, and there are several steps they can take to ensure a safe journey,” said Kansas Highway Patrol Captain Candice Breshears. “Always buckle up and make sure children are in the correct safety seats. If you plan to drink, designate a sober driver beforehand. Enjoy the festivities, but prioritize safety.”

To enhance road safety, additional KHP troopers will be on patrol during Independence Day and the following weekend. Their focus will be on occupant protection, impaired driving, excessive speed, and other crash-causing traffic violations.

Before embarking on their journeys, travelers are encouraged to check for potential delays or construction via KanDrive at www.kandrive.gov . KanDrive offers camera images, interactive maps, and links to rest areas and travel and tourism sites. For assistance on Kansas highways, motorists can call KHP at *47 (*HP) or *582 (*KTA) for the Kansas Turnpike.

    3. Route Planning : Plan your route in advance and check www.kandrive.gov for any construction or travel issues. Share your travel plans with a family member.

    6. Seat Belts and Safety Seats : Ensure everyone in the vehicle is using seat belts or appropriate child safety seats.
    7. Designated Driver : Arrange for a designated driver if you plan to consume alcohol. Never drink and drive.
    8. Hosting Parties : Provide non-alcoholic drink options for designated drivers.
