Mike Dunleavy Jr. says Warriors are in position to make a big move if they need to

The NBA offseason is in full swing. The 2024 NBA Draft concluded on Thursday night and free agency officially opens next week. The Golden State Warriors just missed the playoffs for only the third time since 2012 and may be looking to make a big move this offseason.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. joined Tim Kawakami on the Audacy Sports Podcast “The TK Show” to discuss the team’s drafting mindset, where the franchise currently stands, and if they could be looking to make a big move this summer.

“I think it’s possible because we have the assets to do so,” Dunleavy Jr. said. “You look at our roster, you look at our picks, you look at all the things we have – we certainly have an attractive organization with a competitive ownership group, great coach, desirable players to play with. All those things that we have lends itself to believing that we’re capable of a big move if that’s on the table or available.”

The Warriors have a few key decisions to make this season, including with Chris Paul’s $30 million cap hit and franchise icon Klay Thompson becoming an unrestricted free agent. They could look beyond that, though, depending on what’s out there.

“The hardest part with that is just not that many guys that are available that you feel are worthy of giving up all that. So we’ll see,” Dunleavy continued. “This stuff evolves and changes so quickly, but the one thing I know is we are in position to do it if we need to.”

Timing is everything in sports and that includes free agency and trades. As Dunleavy Jr. pointed out, even if the Warriors were in the perfect position to make a move, it’d take an impact player becoming available at the right price via free agency or trade in order to do so.

NBA teams can begin negotiating with free agents this Sunday and can officially sign them on July 6th.
