MILLVILLE, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) —  It’s the season for summer carnivals, and one getting ready to kick off is nearing a milestone celebration.

The nostalgic merry-go-round music plays from the ride of the Millville Carnival Grounds Friday.

The colorful horses are up and moving, meaning only one thing. This year marks the Millville Community Volunteer Fire Company’s 95th Firemen’s Carnival.

Some people come for the caramel corn.

Jim Eves says “It’s unbelievable. The heat in that stand, but the big thing is the volunteers. We have a great, great bunch of people in there.”

Or the region’s history of agriculture.

“We have pictures from late 1800s. Flour bags that are back in the 1800s from some local mills, early 1900s,” says Terry Rider.

But others are looking to have fun over the next eight days. The clowns looking forward to making their return on the road.

Coming together as a community, the carnival also gives the public a chance to learn more about the fire company.

President John Brown says profits from the event help them operate year-round, and they are in desperate need for volunteers.

“It’s not all just about going into the fire. We need people to run rescue, run food, drinks, refreshments to the firemen.”

So hitch a ride on a horse and embrace the area’s history.

The Millville Firemen’s Carnival kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. and runs through July 6.
