Toddlers are nothing if not unpredictable. One minute, it seems like your little one is wise beyond their years and understands just about everything you say...and the next, it's just like having a little baby again (albeit one who can walk and maybe sort of talk). You never know which version you're going to get!

In a video posted on June 27, a dad accidentally gets locked out of the house when he goes to throw his 17-month-old daughter's diaper away outside...and it's up to the toddler to unlock the door and let him back in. It seems like she's listening carefully as he explains what she needs to do, but she is pretty young...and dad is starting to panic!

Phew! Good thing she's such a smart little girl. Commenters got a huge kick out of this clip from @AudreyGoesHam .

"She's like don't interrupt me again," wrote Ayan Nay.

"She knew all along. She was just thinking if she should do it or not," wrote pkayyy_.

"That little nod told me everything. She knew how to open it, she just wanted to watch you panic for a minute," wrote Ace The Frenchie.

"Then she walks away like okay back to my show lmaoooo," wrote Crystal Nicole.

Classic toddler behavior! She's already world-weary at 17 months. You can't always depend on kids this age to follow instructions, so the situation definitely could have gone a number of different ways. Dad is fortunate it worked out as well as it did!

When Do Toddlers Learn How to Follow Directions?

"Helping your little one learn how to understand and follow directions is a process," according to What to Expect.

It's not until kids get close to two years that you can really expect them to comprehend what you're telling them and cooperate.

"Her ability to understand words skyrockets at this age — she'll soon understand hundreds of words (though she can’t say them all just yet). She can recognize when something is labeled incorrectly (like if you call the 'dog' a 'plane'). By age 2, she also is able to start understanding and following two-part directions, such as 'Get your lovey and put it in the basket.'"

By the time your little one is around 3 years old, they should be able to follow instructions with two or three steps. Of course, as this video proves, younger kids can surprise you sometimes...if you're lucky!
