KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Electronic filing for existing Kansas appellate cases will be resuming on July 1, 2024. This process will become mandatory on July 8 and will end most paper-only processes in place following the 2023 cybersecurity incident in the Kansas court system.

Following the incident, the appellate clerk’s office managed all case processing on paper. All cases and case filings are now in a new case management system.

A new system was launched on June 17 to restore electronic filing in appellate courts. The system is a part of the Kansas Court project plan to move all case processing to a single, web-based platform. The case management system is also used by the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals and the clerk of the appellate courts.

“We were working on the appellate case management system when the cyberattack occurred, forcing technology staff to shift their attention to restoring district court operations,” Chief Justice Marla Luckert said.

“Once district courts were back online, we returned to the appellate case management system project and appellate E-filing.”

It is not currently possible to search appellate cases in the Kansas Judicial Center or online. The judicial branch is working with the vendor of the new case management system to develop public access, similar to district court information.

If someone needs information about a case pending before the appellate courts, they can contact the appellate clerk’s office to request information here: appellateclerk@kscourts.org .
