Brora announced on Thursday that the resurrected Scottish distillery released a 44-year-old single-cask whisky bottled at 49.1% ABV. Just 150 bottles exist, each with a suggested retail price of £10,000 ($12,640). They will be available exclusively in-person from the Highland distillery. Named Brora 44-Year-Old Untold Depths, the whisky was drawn from cask 2367, which aged in Warehouse No. 1 at the distillery. The brand said it is a celebration of Brora's "Age of Peat," which ran from 1969 through 1981. This whisky was distilled during that era, in 1977.
"The second in a series of releases from the distillery, 'Untold Depths' is a classic pairing of gentle cask and medium peating which explores the full depth of taste of which Brora is capable," Diageo Master Blender Dr. Craig Wilson said in a news release. "On the nose the whisky holds waxy hints of fragrant incense and green grape skins drift through light peat smoke, then dried herb and scented oil slowly rising through a swirl of buttery toffee. Waxy-smooth, the sweet, lightly fruity taste reaches a long and fragrant finish with a pinch of white pepper."
The resurrected scotch distillery also shared that the first casks it filled since being resurrected have finally matured into scotch whisky — in other words, three years old — signifying that the distillery has finally come into its own. Guests who visit the distillery can sample the fledgling whisky, even though it will not be bottled until several years from now.
"A historic milestone, three years on since the Wildcat Gates reopened, our new make spirit is coming of age," Brora Distillery host Andrew Flatt said. "This year, what lies in the casks at Brora can finally be called Scotch whisky. We see this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for guests to be amongst the first in the world to sample this whisky in over forty years. It is an honor to present three different styles of spirit to aficionados, collectors and fans of Brora who choose to visit our Highland home."
