JACKSON, S.C. (WJBF) – If you’re a fan of birds and walking trails, then the Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary might be right up your alley.

For this episode “Your Hometown Road Trip,” we stopped in and spoke with Sanctuary Manager, Brandon Heitkamp about the area, and what people can expect when they visit.

    Tell us about this place.

“We are a non-profit, privately owned, bird sanctuary that has been owned since 1975 by the National Audubon Society. One of the oldest non-profits in the country.”

What kind of stuff can you do when you come out here?

“We have seasons because birds have seasons, so during the Spring and Fall, we have a lot of beautiful birds that come through, but we have people birding and walking and hiking, and using the trail systems and ponds from dawn to dusk. People are welcome. It’s a great photography spot. We have 6 different miles of trail; it’s 3 trails here at the main campus with butterfly gardens and picnic pavilions, and occasionally classes running. We teach adults and youths about the outdoors.”

How many birds are out here?

“We have a list of everything that’s been seen on sight, and the list is 225 different species of birds.”

What’s it like seeing people discover this place?

“I love the fact that we have more and more people discovering this place every year, and they find this hidden treasure in Aiken County. I would love everyone to know about it.”

What do people need to do to come out here?

“We are non-profit so I’m always happy to have support from people, but we are free to the public. We allow people to come for free every single day of the year with no exceptions from dawn to dusk.”

The team got a chance to walk around and check out some of the sights and were impressed about some of the history that they found in the area.

The folks at the Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary hope more people come out and discover this hidden gem.
