West Virginia political leaders react to first presidential debate

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — By many accounts, even from fellow Democrats, it was a rough night for President Joe Biden in this year’s first presidential debate Thursday night. But former President Donald Trump took some punches, too.

So how is this playing amongst West Virginia political leaders? Usually, these things split across party lines, but it’s clear many Democrats are concerned about the president’s performance.

It was a very pointed debate as each candidate called the other a liar, and said their opponent was “the worst U.S. president in history.” The 90-minute debate was also peppered with remarks about former President Trump’s legal problems. But the most talked about reaction was President Biden often having trouble speaking and getting to the point of his remarks.

On Friday, West Virginia’s top political leaders weighed in.

“I think there is a lot of chatter today on President Biden’s demeanor, and so, I think a lot of people found it concerning. And so, I think that drew a great contrast and went to President Trump’s advantage, no doubt,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, (R-WV).

“Well, I think it is true that the president had a bad night, I think there is a fundamental difference between having a bad night and being a bad person. And all we heard from former President Trump last night were lies,” said Del. Mike Pushkin, (D-Kanawha) and State Party Chairman.

State Chairman Pushkin also says the Democratic party should not try to replace President Biden on the national ticket.

President Biden campaigned in North Carolina Friday while Former President Trump campaigned in the key battleground state of Virginia.

According to “The Hill” newspaper, 67% of CNN viewers said Trump won the debate, while 33% favored Biden. That’s a 2-to-1 margin.
