Oklahoma Corporation Commission reminds of heat-related electric disconnect rules

(KOAM) - As the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures soaring to 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher over the next 10 days, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission’s Public Utility Division is reminding residents about the state's rules regarding electric service disconnects during extreme heat.

According to the rule, in any area where the morning or updated National Weather Service forecast predicts a heat index of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter within the next 24 hours, utilities must suspend disconnects for impacted customers that day. The rule also applies if the observed heat index reaches that point.

The rule is part of the Commission's broader set of disconnect procedures that utilities must follow year-round for customers who fail to pay their bills. In addition to weather-related suspensions, utilities are required to delay disconnects for customers who can document that a loss of power would be life-threatening or who demonstrate that they have applied for financial aid from federal, state, or local agencies to help cover their utility bills. These customers must also agree to enter into deferred payment agreements with their providers, pledging to pay what they owe over time.

However, the rule does not apply in cases involving customers who tamper with a utility's equipment, obtain service without a contract, or provide false or misleading information to avoid disconnection.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission regulates six electric service providers: Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co., Public Service Company of Oklahoma, Arkansas Valley Electric Cooperative Corp., Canadian Valley Electric Cooperative, Inc., Empire District Electric Co., and Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Inc.

For utility customers with questions about service disconnections during extreme weather, the OCC Consumer Services can be reached at 405-521-2331.

Stay informed and safe as temperatures rise, and take necessary precautions to ensure uninterrupted service during the heatwave.
