LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Locals in Hillsdale County gathered Friday to remember the life of a sheriff’s deputy who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Thursday.

The deputy has been identified as 51-year-old William Butler Jr, a married father of three.

“It was a basic traffic stop… he was shot,” said Londa Aube, who lives down the road from where the shooting took place. “It hit a little closer to home knowing that we’ve known him for years, and he was one of the good ones. One of the good guys.”

Members of Hillsdale County’s tight-knit community came out in numbers to the sheriff’s office, where Deputy Butler’s car was parked and decorated in memorial .

“Even in a small community this tight-knit, it’s happening more,” said Aube. “I’m confident that this community will pull together in this time, and we’re all here for his family—the community is here for his family.”

Community members have been stopping by, placing flowers, and even donating food to the sheriff’s office.

“So far, I have seen nothing but an outpour of love and kindness and that is amazing,” said Rondee Butcher, a resident of the area. “You don’t expect something like this to happen.”

Community members are also planning a candlelight vigil to be held next Thursday.
