Anthony Gordon could join his best mate at Liverpool as 'contact' made over transfer

Liverpool is once again being linked with a sensational move for Anthony Gordon this summer. Despite his links with Everton though, he has revealed one of his best friends is already at Anfield .

According to HITC , Liverpool has contacted Newcastle about Gordon's situation, having identified him as a potential transfer target.

Gordon certainly wouldn't feel homesick if he made the move to Liverpool. He was born and raised in the city, even coming through the Liverpool youth system before transferring to Everton. He has previously cited both Steven Gerrard and Mohamed Salah as role models .

But on top of that, Gordon already has a close connection with a member of the Liverpool ranks. Speaking to The Overlap earlier this year, brought to you by Sky Bet , he named his best friends in football earlier this year.

"I'd say I've got three," Gordon told Gary Neville . " Curtis Jones , Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international."

Gordon would later confirm that Jones is an 'international' mate, although the pair — separated by less than a month in age — did briefly overlap in the Liverpool youth setup before the Newcastle winger was released as a 10-year-old. Fast-forward to last summer, and both were key presences as England claimed the U21 European Championship trophy.

Jones captained the side to success, while Gordon was England's joint-top scorer, one of three players to net twice at the tournament. Neither are eligible at U21 level anymore, although both have now received call-ups to the senior squad.

The pair were named in Gareth Southgate's initial squad ahead of Euro 2024, although Jones was cut for the final 26-man party, with Gordon making the plane to Germany.

If the pair are to reunite at Liverpool, it will take a massive transfer fee. The Daily Star believes it would take a bid of $126m (£100m/€117m) to really interest Newcastle, although the Magpies are under pressure to sell 'one or two' key stars in order to comply with financial rules.

Liverpool.com says: One thing you would say about Gordon is that he ticks a lot of transfer boxes. Harking back to Michael Edwards ' first spell in the Liverpool/FSG setup, the club saw 23 as the sweet spot in terms of recruitment.

Meanwhile, Gordon's data holds up well. Along with Salah, he's one of a select number to reach double figures for both goals and assists in the Premier League this season .

It's the required transfer fee that makes this one hard to really imagine. But as a new era for Liverpool beckons, only time will tell and Jones would no doubt be pleased to see his 'best mate' arrive.
