A man has been detained under the mental health act after police completed a controlled explosion of a suspicious package in Nottinghamshire near university dwellings.

Residents in Lenton were evacuated by officers after two packages were discovered; the first having been declared to pose no risk and the second is still being checked.

Police completed the controlled explosion in Maxwell Court and the second is being assessed in the nearby Allington Avenue.

The packages were found in a student populated area and temporary accommodation was provided to those who needed it.

Many of the students have now been allowed to return to their accommodation.

Superintendent Jon Foy, of Nottinghamshire Police , said: "We'd like to thank all those who took in friends and neighbours who were displaced.

"Specialist search teams remain in the area as work continues to make the remaining package safe."
