Liverpool has yet to complete the first transfer of the Arne Slot era. Who will occupy the small place in history for the Reds’ new head coach which Marko Grujic holds for Jürgen Klopp?

It could be Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, as speculation continues to build that Liverpool is looking to bring the 23-year-old back to the city in which he grew up. It has been reported by HITC that the Reds have made contact with the Magpies regarding Gordon, which suggests the wheels could be in motion for a transfer to be completed.

The England international is on the brink of entering his peak playing years and only has two seasons remaining on his contract. It would be the kind of deal in which Liverpool luxuriated during Michael Edwards ’ previous time at the club. While this is obviously no guarantee that the transfer will happen, from what Gordon has said in the past it’s reasonable to assume he would at least consider the move.

He was on the club’s books when he was very young, joining Merseyside rivals Everton as an 11-year-old. “ Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” Gordon said on The Overlap recently. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player.”

The Newcastle man also mentioned Mohamed Salah when discussing the importance of being in the right frame of mind to play. “My confidence comes from my preparation,” he said , latter adding: “I saw Mo Salah talk about it — that's where I took even more interest, because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. People like that, you're not going to go too far wrong following what they do.”

Gordon also spoke of his admiration for the Egyptian in a separate interview on TNT Sports' YouTube channel . "I watch Salah a lot," he said. "Numbers-wise, the positions he takes up, the runs in behind — he’s unbelievable. He’s probably the best player in the world for me because he has so much impact on the game."

Among current Liverpool players, it isn’t just Salah with whom the reported transfer target has a connection. Gordon named a Reds midfielder when asked about his best friends in football on The Overlap. "I'd say I've got three," he told Gary Neville . " Curtis Jones , Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international."

The Magpies’ winger has spoken fondly about Liverpool’s home ground too, praising it when speaking to Channel 4's TikTok channel about the best atmospheres in which he has played. "Other than St. James’ [Park], it's Anfield by far. I think because I am from the city, I grew up watching it. I just think before the game, when they sing You'll Never Walk Alone, it's top. It is top level." His bonds with Liverpool clearly run deep.

Liverpool.com says: With transfer rumors it can be easy to join dots with connections which don't exist in reality. However, Gordon grew up in Liverpool admiring Gerrard, takes inspiration from Salah, is mates with Jones and loves the Anfield atmosphere. What more do you need, Anthony?
