According to the Daily Mail , the Reds have been in contact with Newcastle, with the Magpies willing to sell their star player as they look to comply with the Premier League ’s financial rules. Talks though are said to have broken down following an offer from the St James’ Park club.
The report claims that the proposed deal would have seen Jarell Quansah moving in the opposite direction. Liverpool though decided that was not right for them.
Although the Reds are said to admire Gordon, they don’t want to lose Quansah, who is seen as a future England international after earning his first senior international call-up ahead of Euro 2024. The defender enjoyed a breakthrough season at Anfield in 2023/24, having made 33 appearances across all competitions.
It is suggested that talks could be revived over the weekend, although Liverpool did not make a counter offer following the discussions. Newcastle needs to sell before June 30 in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Failing to do so could run the risk of a points deduction, as Everton and Nottingham Forest found out last season. Had a deal been struck for Gordon, a medical in Leipzig had been mooted, with the 23-year-old currently away with England at Euro 2024.
Gordon is said to be happy at Newcastle, although he is aware of the talks between his current side and his boyhood club. He started out at Liverpool’s academy as a child before making the move to Everton.
Not only that, but Gordon has dropped several hints at being a Liverpool fan, having named Steven Gerrard as his hero while also speaking glowingly about Mohamed Salah . He has also revealed one of his best friends is current Reds midfielder Curtis Jones .
Liverpool.com says: Well this is an interesting development. Gordon has always felt something of a long shot, but perhaps there is more to Liverpool’s reported interest.
The Reds have made the right call by turning down a deal that would see Quansah moving in the opposite direction. The defender has a bright future at Anfield, and there’s no way that should be given up for another forward, considering Liverpool is already well-stocked in the wide areas.
It will be interesting to see what else, if anything, comes of this now. Newcastle clearly needs to sell, but all the power lies with Liverpool should they return to the table.
