Kevin Garnett was one of the guys talented enough to make the transition from high school basketball to the NBA. However, this path was not without its challenges, as collegiate recruiters tried every play in the book to get 'The Big Ticket' to join their programs, even if it meant making some shady, illegal offers.

One particular recruiter took things too far by straight-up offering Garnett cash in front of his grandmother. But as the legendary forward recalled, his grandma gave him a resounding no.

Garnett could've picked any college he wanted

As a senior at Farragut Career Academy, Garnett averaged 25.2 points, 17.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 6.5 blocks per game. His impressive showings earned him accolades as National High School Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball for the state of Illinois, which only solidified his status as the best player in his class.

At first, KG was considering his college options, which is why recruiters were trying to get him on their team. During his interview with Dan Patrick, the 15-time All-Star revealed that he was offered cash under the table on multiple occasions. Still, one particular incident really stood out.

According to 'The Big Ticket,' a recruiter tried to slide his money right in front of his grandmother, but she wasn't having any of it. So, to stop the constant nagging, she used an unconventional method to make the family's intentions crystal clear once and for all.

"I was staying with my grandmother at the time because recruiting was getting to the point where it was just obese. My mother thought it would be a better idea for me to change addresses," Garnett said . "Life was running so fast at this time, but I had a certain recruiter come see me. And he offered me some cash in front of my grandma. And she went and got her shotgun."

KG had a lot to learn from his grandmother

One might assume that Garnett's grandmother wanted to intimidate the recruiter. However, her aim was to impart an important lesson to her grandson—if he allowed himself to be swayed by money once, it would set a precedent for the rest of his life.

"She told me. 'Always set the tone with people that you can never be bought. If you can be bought once, you can be bought always,'" Garnett added. "That stuck with me forever."
