Bill Gates’s Huge aI Problem

Bill Gates has done the math. The enormous amount of energy AI consumes, and the drain it puts on America’s energy production and infrastructure is worth it. AI may be able to solve that problem.

According to Bloomberg, “The Microsoft Corp. co-founder says data centers will be less energy-intensive in the future as artificial intelligence makes computations more efficient.” AI, he believes, will make the entire US energy more efficient and help the country meet its greenhouse gas goals.

Nuclear Power Plants

Gates has invested in a company that makes small nuclear power plants, and the first one will go online soon. Many experts believe that if this form of energy becomes acceptable to utilities and the public, it will radically change the harmful effects of fossil fuels on the environment. However, he has not said where the capital will come from to effect this transformation. He has also left out the objection many Americans have to nuclear, some of which goes back to the Three Mile Island meltdown in 1979.

Gates has also not offered a solution to the near-term problem that AI production puts on the energy grid today, nor has it offered a solution for solving that problem immediately.
