Everton could stand to benefit if Liverpool revives transfer talks for Anthony Gordon this summer.

The Reds could return for the England international after talks this week broke down over a potential signing (as per Daily Mail ). With Newcastle demanding Jarell Quansah in return, the deal was always doomed to fail, such is the regard the young defender is held in at Anfield .

All is not lost though. It has been suggested that talks could be revived this weekend, with Newcastle in need of a quick cash injection.

The Magpies need to sell before June 30 in order to comply with the Premier League ’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, or risk being handed a points deduction next season. That puts the power firmly in Liverpool’s hands.

Sporting director Richard Hughes undoubtedly has the upper hand should he return to the table. Given Liverpool is already well-stocked with forwards, the pressure would firmly be on Newcastle to produce a more palatable offer.

If a deal is struck though, the Reds won’t be able to avoid handing a boost to its nearest rival. Gordon of course began his career at Liverpool’s neighbors Everton, and the Toffees stand to benefit should the 23-year-old be on the move again this summer.

According to the ECHO , there is a sell-on clause in Gordon’s contract at Newcastle, meaning Everton would get a significant bonus if he completed a move to Anfield.

Gordon’s departure was somewhat acrimonious back in January 2023, and he probably hasn’t helped matters since by dropping several hints that he is in fact a Liverpool fan . Speaking about his decision to leave Everton , Gordon said: “I am too ambitious to turn down the opportunity which was presented to me.

“Newcastle United were only going one way and looking from the outside they were flying, I think they were fourth when I was signing, so it’s a no brainer. My ambition is to be at the very top of football and I couldn’t do that where I was.”

Liverpool.com says: Well, if Everton stands to benefit, it would be a small price to pay. It’s not like any amount they get from Gordon moving to Liverpool is instantly going to get them back challenging for the top four.

It will be interesting to see whether Liverpool returns to the table with Newcastle. Clearly, all the power lies with the Reds, and it would be in Newcastle’s best interests to get a deal done quickly.
