Blocking out sunlight makes getting sleep in the wee hours of the morning much easier.

    IKEA

If you've ever moved , then you know the joyful discomfort during the first few days in a new place. It's yours and you're so grateful to finally be in there but it still doesn't 100% feel like home yet. Boxes are all over the place, your wall art isn't up, and you don't even remember the address by heart yet. One of the biggest inconveniences in a new place is often the windows , especially if you're used to sleeping in a room shielded by blackout curtains.

After lugging loads of stuff into the home and the days you just spent packing, throwing up curtains isn't always first on the list. I typically spend at least the first few days in a new place powering through with just blinds hanging in the windows until I regain the energy (and boxless floor space) to get my blackout curtains up. And until I can finally track down wherever I packed my drill. That said, new homeowner and TikToker Lucy Appleton just demonstrated a cheap temporary curtain hack for that in-between stage that's been hiding in plain sight at IKEA .

Lucy recently bought a house and one of the things she dreaded was the time she'd have to spend with no privacy and way too much sunshine in the mornings until she could get blinds and curtains up.

However, one of her supporters shared the perfect hack: Temporary blackout blinds from IKEA.

    SCHOTTIS blinds at IKEA

    IKEA

"You can get paper blinds at IKEA... Life changing," the person recommended. The SCHOTTIS blinds actually aren't made of paper although they're thin enough to create that misconception. That said, the suggestion was still on point for those first few days after moving into a new place. The blinds prove to be a truly convenient choice. The SCHOTTIS design provides complete darkness in a room when pulled shut thanks to their opaque black 100 % recycled polyester material. They can be installed without a drill because they simply stick to a flat surface with adhesive. You can raise or lower them at your will, fastening them with clips included in the package. And they're only $5.99 a piece!

Watch Lucy hunt the SCHOTTIS blinds down in person at her local IKEA and then install them in less than five minutes.

Easy, right? IKEA may be known for its fabulous, customizable furniture and a pretty delicious food court when you shop there in person, but the brand has plenty of hidden home essentials gems like this within its inventory that can make life easier overall. The cult-favorite home goods retailer boasts everything from plasticware to storage bags to wall hooks. If you're ever in a jam at home, there's probably an affordable fix for it at IKEA.

    Happy shopping!
