Dogs are incredibly social creatures who love all the attention they can get. Some, like one Golden Retriever named Maverick make every attempt to see everyone around them. Only, he's doing it all wrong and it's adorable!
On June 25, 2024, Maverick's mom ( @maverickthegolden ) shared the hilarious way the Golden tries (and fails) to people watch. Check out the TikTok clip below!
The minute-and-a-half video opens with sweet Maverick wedged between the railing and a basket on his balcony as his mom notes he doesn't realize there's a lot more room to explore if he'd look around. The curious pup is searching for neighbors, she says, nudging him to take a peek over the divider to see if they're home. Of course Maverick doesn't quite get it until she shows him where to go, but it's okay—as confused as he is, it only makes him cuter.
Eventually, Maverick—aka "Deck Dog"—stands to see if his friends are home (they aren't) and patiently sits for reassurance from mom. The video concludes with the pup dipping his toes in the pool and finally relaxing while mom takes a swim herself.
With more than 37,000 likes, many said they wished they could be his neighbor.
"If my neighbor was Mav I’d live on that patio 24/7," one person said. "Smiley Deck Dog-cutest neighbor perching on the wall to see if anyone is home," another wrote. "I would do anything to hug this beautiful boy and have him as a neighbor," another added.
People watching may not have gone as expected but there's always tomorrow, Maverick!

Why Are Golden Retrievers So Nice?
Of all the dog breeds, there are a few that stand out for being so darn friendly and loving , and Goldens are among the top choices. If you're wondering if the Golden Retriever is the right dog for you, the American Kennel Club says that because they're part of the Sporting Group, they've been bred for a temperament that gets along easily with humans. They're "joyful, loyal," and obedient "service working animals," who are highly adaptable and trainable.
Though environment and socialization in puppyhood can contribute to their overall personality, this breed is inherently made to co-exist and please their people. This explains why so many pups like Maverick love people watching and will happily take all the love and pets available.
Maybe it wasn't Maverick's day to interact with others, but we're pretty confident he'll keep trying until it happens!
