Liverpool makes its feelings clear on Luis Suárez with subtle social media post

Liverpool has a lot of players on international duty this summer. The numbers have dwindled a little but there are several men who can harbor realistic ambitions of continental success.

The likes of Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai have already been knocked out of Euro 2024 . Despite a deathly dull Group Stage for England , it remains favorite with the bookmakers to win the European Championship . That’s good news for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez .

There are also four Liverpool players at the Copa America , each of whom represents one of the four leading teams in the bookies’ winner market. While Luis Díaz is the first Colombian international to play for the Reds, the club has had players from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay in the past. One for the latter was Luis Suárez , whose bond with Darwin Núñez has been highlighted by Liverpool on its social media channels.

The past and present Reds’ strikers have made 10 appearances together for their national side. In a 2-0 win over Canada in September 2022, not long after Núñez joined Liverpool, the duo both started and combined for a goal. A cross from Suárez was headed home by Darwin to give Uruguay the two-goal lead it would not relinquish.

Their last shared pitch time occurred at the 2022 World Cup. It was again in a 2-0 victory, this time over Ghana. The opposition was notable, as it was against the African side that Suárez famously handled on the goal line in 2010. He collected an assist in Qatar too, though it was for Giorgian de Arrascaeta rather than Núñez.

Since taking charge of Uruguay, former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa has not made much use of Suárez. His two appearances for the Argentine have both seen him replace Núñez from the bench, and it was the latest of these which led to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from the official Liverpool FC account.

The symbolic changing of the guard occurred as Uruguay continued the fine start it has made to the Copa America with a 5-0 thumping of Bolivia. Núñez scored the second goal of the game, with Suárez replacing him for the final seven minutes (plus stoppage time).

The Liverpool FC admin marked the moment with a raising hands emoji and a Uruguay flag, as you can see above. Suárez’ spell with the Reds was relatively brief and he was a controversial presence during his time at the club, but he was fantastic at his best too.

He spearheaded Liverpool’s 2013/14 Premier League title charge with 43 goal contributions – a tally only four men have topped in one season in the competition – in just 32.9 per 90s. It is clear from the X post that Suárez is still well regarded at the club with that record going a long way towards explaining why.

Liverpool.com says: As this summer marks 10 years since Suárez left the club, there will be younger Liverpool supporters who won't remember him playing in the famous red shirt. Those that do will have the Uruguayan ranked among the finest players they have seen represent the club though.
