VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WRIC) — Legend has it that the well-known pirate Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, once buried his treasure on a certain beach in Virginia.

Those familiar with First Landing State Park may know the urban legend that Blackbeard’s treasure is buried somewhere on its shores. Thanks to park staff, there’s a family-friendly adventure people can attend to find out.

According to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, people can visit First Landing State Park every Thursday in July from 2 to 3 p.m. for a Blackbeard Treasure Hunt. The program is suitable for young children and involves walking less than one mile.

Some believe that before Blackbeard headed off to fight Lt. Robert Maynard, who eventually beheaded him, he buried his treasure along the coast near Cape Henry, where he and his crew were allegedly stationed for a short time.

Although it is debated whether Blackbeard’s treasure ever existed in the first place, maybe someone who is lucky will be able to put this mystery to rest.
