That sixth-sense maternal instinct really kicked in here for a big mama elephant who was with her calf at a watering hole, just trying to get a little hydration before being surprised by a killer crocodile lurking in the murky pond. Hat tip to USA TODAY for the find on this one, and what an incredible job the mom did here to stomp out that damn croc and send it on its way. https://twitter.com/paragenetics/status/1806267074576294026 I get that certain organisms in the animal kingdom have evolved to be carnivorous and must devour to survive, but come on now, croc! We can't be having innocent baby elephants mowed down on camera. Once the crocodile engaged its attack strategy, though, the angry mother quite literally stomped out that plan in a matter of seconds. There isn't much time for this video to settle in before the action gets super heated, but I love how that croc took almost no time at all to realize how outmatched it was, and how that mama elephant might stomp a hole through its head. Best to just move on and snack on something else. Thankfully the croc did, because it would've been tragic to see the calf get gobbled up — in front of its own mother, no less. As was glimpsed in a safari video covered last month where a big elephant was snooping around the vehicle occupied by a group of tourists, these massive creatures are physically imposing but are gentle, kind, and social creatures who care for their families and herds. Of course, since they
are so big, if they feel any sort of threat to their kin or friends, the smallest outburst could prove fatal to their perceived instigators. At least from what I've seen, it's rare to capture an elephant in real time negotiating a life-and-death situation. That crocodile may have slunk away from this dust-up, but I'll bet you that reptile is down bad with at least some kind of injury. Let's end with a wholesome elephant video, shall we? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6aA4gjIM5U&pp=ygUOZWxlcGhhbnRzIGtpbmQ%3D
