Besides the lightning that delayed the Euro Round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark for 25 minutes, the action on the field in the second half displayed flashes of brilliance.

Striker Kai Havertz sent a perfectly placed penalty kick past Danish goaltender Kasper Schmeichel in the 53rd minute to put Germany in the lead 1-0.

The spot kick was awarded after the video assistant referee, using new ball-tracking technology, spotted the ball graze Danish defender Joachim Andersen's right hand inside the 18-yard box.

The Danes thought they had actually struck first just moments prior when Andersen finished off a chaotic sequence to put the ball behind German goaltender Manuel Neuer.

However, semi-automated offside technology determined midfielder Thomas Delaney was in an illegal position by the slimmest of margins — quite literally by a toe — and the goal was nullified.

Despite a valiant effort by the Danes to push forward and get back into the match, German midfielder Jamal Musiala iced the game with a clutch breakaway strike to beat Schmeichel in the 69th minute putting the host nation up 2-0.

Germany now advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of Spain and Georgia, who faceoff on Sunday.

The quarterfinals are scheduled to take place July 5-6.
