WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Washington County kids were breaking a sweat and putting out fires.

Country Oaks Volunteer Fire Department held their first-ever Firefighter Day Camp.

The goal is to teach kids what to do in the event of a fire as well as introduce them to firefighting as a career while having some fun at camp.

Kids aged 2-16, got to take part in miniature-sized fire activities. That included fire truck races, an obstacle course, and chopping down cardboard boxes designed to look like burning buildings.

They also got the chance to put out fake fires.

“Oh, gosh. It makes me smile from ear to ear. I see all these young kids out here. I know most of them, which makes me really happy to see them out here and just to teach them something new. Each and every time we see them is great,” Country Oaks VFD Chief Troy Cunningham said.

Inside, the kids watched informative videos about preventing fires and got to try on some of the gear.

During this event, the blood bus was on scene as well, so while the kids were playing the adults were about to donate.

Cunningham says he aims to do a lot more camps in the future.
