Anthony Gordon is open to joining Liverpool this summer, according to reports . The Reds’ chances of landing the Newcastle star though may have already ended.

Talks over a potential deal to bring the England international to Anfield broke down this week , as per the Daily Mail . Newcastle was said to have been willing to offload Gordon, although Liverpool turned down an offer that would have seen Jarell Quansah move in the opposite direction.

It was suggested though that talks could be revived over the weekend, with the Magpies still needing to a cash injection. With the Premier League’s PSR deadline falling on June 30 , Newcastle needed to sell in order to avoid a potential points deduction.

They may fall within bounds even without a deal for Gordon though, with two other players looking set to depart St James’ Park . According to The Athletic , a deal has been struck for Nottingham Forest to sign Elliot Anderson, while Brighton has negotiated a deal for Yankuba Minteh , who was also linked with Liverpool.

That could end the Reds’ hopes of landing Gordon this summer, although the 23-year-old is open to moving to Anfield , according to Fabrizio Romano . The Guardian also suggests that Liverpool remains interested in signing the forward, and could revive talks.

Gordon has previously dropped hints that he is a Liverpool fan, despite having started his professional career at Everton. Before making the move to Goodison Park, he had been with the Reds’ academy.

And he told Gary Neville on The Overlap that his hero growing up had been former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard , while he has also spoken glowingly about Mohamed Salah . What’s more, Gordon also revealed one of his best friends is current Reds midfielder Curtis Jones .

Liverpool.com says: We’ll have to wait and see whether Liverpool does return to the table with Newcastle, although you’d have to imagine it will be less likely now if deals have been struck for Minteh and Anderson. Some of the power will have now shifted back to the Magpies, who will no doubt want to keep Gordon if they can.

If it doesn’t happen this summer though, no doubt a precedent has been set which will see Gordon linked with a move to Anfield for years to come. Who knows, if Newcastle fail to get Champions League football again next season, it could be a deal that is revisited in the future.
