Last week at Game Con Canada in Edmonton, Alberta, Ray Fisher took the main stage to celebrate all things gaming, play some Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 , and even take part in a Mario Kart competition.

Ray Fisher is known for his roles as Darrian Bloodaxe in the Rebel Moon franchise and Cyborg in The Justice League . He also has a history working in theatre and can be seen in the upcoming film The Piano Lesson alongside Samuel L. Jackson .  Fisher is no stranger to the stage, and he looked right at home talking with Game Con Canada hosts and patrons throughout the three-day gaming expo.

We at CGMagazine were lucky enough to chat with Fisher right smack in the middle of the MSI booth, surrounded by amazing tech and gaming tournaments. We asked him about everything from working on the stage and big-budget films to his favourite console, and the answer might surprise you!

We are here in the MSI booth with Lucky at Game Con Canada. This is your first gaming convention, I heard.

Ray Fisher: This is, yeah. My first gaming-specific convention, I’ve done a lot of comic conventions, and there is definitely some sort of crossover between the gaming world and the comic world. But this is my first gaming-specific, and it’s pretty awesome, I gotta say.

What do you like the most about GameCon Canada so far?

Ray Fisher: I mean the games, number one for sure. The people. You guys have a really great crowd here. Everybody’s been really welcoming, really warm, really inviting.

    It’s the Canada in us.

Ray Fisher: It’s the Canadian way, is what I hear tell. But also, just like the passion, the love for the games, right, like this is something that I think is universal. You know, I’m glad I’m getting to experience it here for the first time. And I hear tell this is the largest gaming expo in Canada, so it’s been awesome.

Great! Now, we were looking at your work history. You have a lot of work on stage and on screen. Do you have a love for both? Are you looking to continue both, or do you prefer one over the other?

Ray Fisher: Both, for sure. I mean, it’s kind of like apples and oranges, right? You don’t eat the same thing every single day, right? You definitely get a different appreciation for film by doing theatre and vice versa. I think for me, having a live audience really just adds a whole other layer of energy to a performance. You never know what you’re gonna get. Every day it’s something different.

Film, it’s a bit more of a controlled environment. But as an actor, you have a little less control over what the final product is, right? Because there’s so many hands in the pot. Editors, sound designers, all of this stuff that really contributes to making the thing come to life.

Absolutely. A lot of your work is very action-oriented. Is that the genre you prefer? Are there other genres you’re looking to get into?

Ray Fisher: The action stuff is cool. I want to continue to do that while I have the physical ability to do so. But this is where the balance comes into play. I get to go out and play superheroes and space rebels and all these things in the movie and TV world. And then I can go do Shakespeare in the theatre world and blend those two loves.

Now, coming from the theatre world into these other projects that are just so grand in scale, what’s that transition like?

Ray Fisher: You know, it was cool. For me, I just buckled down generally and focused on the work. So the spectacle of it, I don’t really feel until after the fact. When you’re watching it, you’re like, “Oh wow, that was crazy, wasn’t it? That was a 200 million dollar…okay, got it. Alright, makes sense now.”

For me, I have to really pare it down for myself, so that way I’m not overwhelmed by how much things cost and so on and so forth. Because that’s an unnecessary level of pressure that me as the actor, I’ve got one specific job. As long as I hone in and do that to the best of my abilities, I’ve done my part.

It’s a very level-headed response. Good for you.

Ray Fisher: Thank you. It’s one of those things, you look at folks who are good at what they do, a lot of them I find just focus on their craft, their portion of it. A lot of it is the prep, and you get in, and by the time it’s time to roll, you’re like, “I got this. I know what it is.”

Awesome. Now, we’re at GameCon Canada, so we have to talk games, obviously.

    Ray Fisher: Of course.

We saw you playing Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. How’d that go?

Ray Fisher: I think it went swimmingly. I think it went swimmingly! I can tell because I’m a bit of a sadist when it comes to the games I play. I’m a big Elden Ring / Dark Souls fan, you know.

    You like to feel bad.

Ray Fisher: I’m a bit of a masochist when it comes to that. But Space Marine felt like it was awesome. I can imagine that, on the harder difficulties, it would be right up that alley.

Are there any other games coming out that you’re looking forward to? We just came off the Xbox showcase , Summer Game Fest …every other showcase.

Ray Fisher: I’m looking forward to the Elden Ring DLC , because you know, as previously mentioned…

I’ve played it. I’m just saying.

    Ray Fisher: Have you really?

I have. I previewed it! It’s pretty great. I can say that because it was the preview!

    Ray Fisher: Lucky you.

So, looking forward to your thoughts on it.

Ray Fisher: No, but that’s definitely a big one I’m looking forward to. I’m also looking forward to [ Call of Duty ] Black Ops 6 . Actually, Black Ops was my entry into the Call of Duty franchise . I was playing Zombies with my brother, and then maybe after a year of just only zombies got into the multiplayer side of things and got pretty good.

Did you get to talk to Karen David, then?

    Ray Fisher: Yeah!

Awesome, that’s exciting! Do you have any other long-standing franchises you love outside of Call of Duty ?

Ray Fisher: All of them. I mean, obviously, the Souls franchise. Anything from FromSoftware, generally speaking. Legend of Zelda , huge fan. I just finished Tears of the Kingdom maybe about a month ago. Couldn’t 100% it because there’s just too much to do. What else? Playing Helldivers right now , Helldivers 2 rather. I’m a huge fan of the Divinity series from Larian Studios, who just did Baldur’s Gate 3 . I’m looking forward to the next Insomniac Divinity when that comes out.

Now, the last 1 is probably the most important. Are you ready?

    Ray Fisher: What’s that?

You said you’re a console player on the main stage. So, are we Xbox, Playstation, or Nintendo?

Ray Fisher: You know, pound for pound, hour for hour, minute for minute, considering all these things, I’ve got to give it to the Switch. I’ve got to give it to the Switch. In terms of portability, hours played certainly. I’m a huge Smash Brothers fan.

And the Switch has definitely saved me on a lot of long plane rides and a lot of long press tours. Being able to take it and run. I love them all. I have everything at this point. I’ve got too many consoles. But I would have to give it to the Switch at this point. You can see from a lot of the peripherals are really going in that compact, portable way now. Nintendo’s struck fire with it.
