Is Anthony Gordon a Liverpool fan? Former Everton winger's telling past comments

Anthony Gordon will not be heading to Anfield any time soon, despite Newcastle United’s PSR fuelled attempts to sell the winger to Liverpool. But one question remains - is Gordon a Liverpool fan?

Over the weekend, news broke the Magpies had offered Liverpool the opportunity to sign Gordon, in a move that would see Reds defender Jarell Quansah head in the opposite direction. However, the Reds had zero intention of letting Quansah , a player they view as a long-term replacement to Virgil van Dijk , leave.

Newcastle, who signed Gordon from Everton in January 2023, have been struggling to meet the Premier League ’s PSR rules, hence why they offered the England international to Liverpool.

But those PSR fears now look to have been alleviated thanks to the prospective sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest respectively.

Those two deals will allow Newcastle to meet the Premier League’s PSR rules, which will also take Gordon, the Magpies player of the season last term, off the market. However, while he may be off the market this summer, that does not mean Liverpool won’t renew their interest in Gordon further down the line.

The Newcastle winger is still of interest to the Reds, and should he ever return to Merseyside as a Liverpool player, it would represent something of a full-circle moment for the England international. The 23-year-old is a boyhood Liverpool fan. Released by the Reds at 11, Gordon joined rivals Everton, whose first team he properly broke into back in 2021.

However, despite having made the grade with the Toffees, Gordon has previously spoken glowingly of his footballing idols who turned out for Liverpool. “ Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” Gordon told The Overlap in April. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player.”

The England international is also close with Reds midfielder Curtis Jones , whom he counts as one of his best friends in football. He also has spoken of his admiration for Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah .

“I watch Salah a lot,” Gordon told TNT Sports . "Numbers-wise, the positions he takes up, the runs in behind — he’s unbelievable. He’s probably the best player in the world for me because he has so much impact on the game."
