Renowned mechanic Scotty Kilmer has issued a warning to car owners contemplating purchasing certain used vehicles in 2024. The expert highlighted that used electric cars carry "more uncertainty" with their values plummeting dramatically compared to their petrol and diesel counterparts.

He suggested that many EVs are still "unproven" leading to motorists being hit with significant price drops. This situation has resulted in owners losing nearly two-thirds of their investment just years later, dealing a major blow to those on a budget. Scotty shared this advice on his YouTube channel, where he regularly provides a variety of top tips and tricks for road users, reports the Express .

Scotty stated: "In the pandemic, the prices of used electric cars were insane. People were selling used Teslas for more than new ones. But that's not the way it always has been." The esteemed car mechanic shared that five years ago, a customer in Houston bought a second-hand Tesla Model S for $45,000.

However, the vehicle had a price tag of over $122,000 when it was brand new just a few years prior. Scotty confessed that the model was priced at just one-third of its original value despite having only 15,000 miles on the odometer. Scotty further added: "Now prices are all over the place. Generally, the price of vehicles classically is the ones that are good and last a long time like Toyota's, have high resale value".

"But the prices of unproven electrical cars, they're starting to come down. They might go right back to where they were five years ago." "You can pay one-third of what you pay for a new one. So just what you need more in electric cars, more uncertainty. Which makes me think most people should be rather uncertain whether they should buy an electric car or not."

Online motorists were quick to praise Scotty for his advice, with some confessing they had been affected. In a clear alignment to traditional fuel sources, others even pledged never to own an electric vehicle.

One YouTube viewer, @TeijoKhanfan, stated: "Gee I wonder why? It's almost like people want a car they can take on long road trips and not have to worry about not only finding a charging station but how long they're gonna have to wait to even get into that station."

"And then taking a half hour to an hour just to charge it back up so they can drive another couple hours." Adding to the chorus of dissenters, @AmericanMan2000 said: "I will never own another EV...ever! ".

Echoing this sentiment, @edwardb5501 added: "Definitely don't buy an electric car. You'll regret it later on." Another commentator wrote: "I'm not ready for a 100 percent electric car, unless I build it."
