A man who exchanged gunfire with police after a chase in Adams County was critically wounded in the town of Big Flats, officials said Sunday.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is spearheading the investigation.

The incident unfolded at about 3 p.m. Saturday when Adams County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call regarding a driver who was armed and allegedly under the influence of narcotics. Deputies located the vehicle about an hour later and several short pursuits followed.

Officials say the driver fired at police and was injured when deputies fired back. He received medical attention on scene and was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.

The man’s name has not yet been released. Deputies involved are on administrative assignment, per agency policy, officials said.

Investigators are assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Town of Rome Police Department, Wisconsin State Crime Lab and a DCI Crime Response Specialist.

No additional details have been disclosed.
