DREAMGIRLS premiered on Broadway in December of 1981 and ran for nearly 4-years. The music was composed by Henry Krieger with book and lyrics by Tom Eyen. Nominated for 11 Tony awards, the production won six including Performance by a Leading Actress, Leading Actor, Featured Actor, Best Book, Choreography, and Lighting Design of a Musical. It tells the story of the rise of The Dreams, a 1960s girl group led by the fictional Effie White, a singer with a huge voice that is replaced by another singer who the producer believes has more commercial appeal.

Where to even begin? I normally like to start these reviews with a snappy one-liner or some broad, philosophical quote about theater, but it’s hard to know where to begin when you’ve just witnessed a Mel Brooks production. Any zinger that I come up with would pale in comparison to the quips of the great Brooks himself, so let’s just stick with the facts: Brookfield Theatre put on a production of The Producers; The audience had a phenomenal time; and now I get to rave about it on the internet. The musical version of the well-known film Tootsie opened on Broadway in 2019, continuing the trend of movies from the 80s finding new life as stage musicals. The stage version follows a similar plot, wherein struggling actor Michael Dorsey decides to disguise himself as a woman after burning all his bridges within the industry. The plot requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, since as ‘Dorothy Michaels’, a middle-aged woman who is described as “built like a tractor”, Dorsey manages to find overwhelming success in an industry that usually rewards youth and beauty, but the actors in Theatre by the Sea’s production are talented and charismatic enough that you want to stick around a see how it turns out.
