HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Indiana is seeing new laws go into effect on July 1. Below is everything you will need to know about these laws.

House Bill 1183: Foreign ownership of land

House Bill 1183 says a prohibited person may not purchase, lease, or acquire property that is located in Indiana and located within a 10-mile radius of a military installation, with certain exceptions.

It also says a prohibited person may not acquire or lease agricultural land or a mineral right or water or riparian right on agricultural land located in Indiana.

A violation of this new law may result in a transfer of the land.

Officials with the Indiana house republicans say Individuals or entities associated with foreign countries like Russia and China will be banned from purchasing or leasing agricultural land, and mineral, water or riparian rights. China, Russia, North Korea and Iran will also be prevented from purchasing or leasing land within a 10-mile radius of military installations.

House Bill 1302: Emergency medical services

House Bill 1302 says a county executive can provide the department of homeland security certain information relating to each emergency medical services (EMS) provider in the county.

The department, in consultation with the Indiana emergency medical services commission, will then prepare and submit a report to the general assembly relating to the provision of EMS.

“This legislation could go a long way toward ensuring every 911 call is answered quickly, and that Hoosiers know help is on the way when they need it most,” said author of the bill Representative Timothy O’Brien

    House Bill 1004: Pension matters

House Bill 1004 says Indiana’s nearly 90,000 retired public servants will receive a 13th check to help cover cost-of-living expenses.

Existing, dedicated funds will be used to make a one-time, post-retirement payment, which will average about $360 per recipient.

House bill 1001: Education and higher education matter

House bill 1001 amends the definition of “eligible student” to include a sibling of a student with a disability with regards to the education scholarship account program (ESA).

More Indiana high school students can apply for a Career Scholarship Account to pursue internships, apprenticeships, and other work-based learning opportunities.

The $5,000 scholarship covers certain expenses like training, career coaching, driver’s education, certification and credentialing exams.
