Saweetie Slams ‘Nepo Baby’ Narrative After Social Media Highlights Her Celebrity Family Tree: ‘It Spits In The Face Of The Child Who Barely Spent Time With Her Hustling Parents’

Oop! Saweetie says she might have a big celebrity family tree, but the “nepo baby” narrative running across social media is a slap in the face to her and her hard-working parents. Note: Nepo refers to nepotism which is when those with power or influence favor relatives, friends, and associates, especially when giving out jobs.

On Saturday (June 29), one user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Finding out Saweetie wrote ‘Icy Girl’ when she was homeless as a manifestation song and it put her on the map to lead her fame and wealth >>>> ‘Looking in the mirror I thank God for what I’m bout to be’ like .”

Responding to the user, another issued a more critical response, stating, “Saweetie even having a homeless stint when she’s familial kin to Willie Harper , Gabrielle Union , MC Hammer , AND Zaytoven is NUTTY. It needs to be studied how that phenomenon occurred.”

Willie Harper, who was a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, is her grandfather and her dad Johnny Harper was also a football player playing for San Jose State University. Actress Gabrielle Union-Wade and music producer Zaytoven are her cousins, and famed rapper MC Hammer is her uncle.

Responding to all of the “nepo baby” and celebrity family tree chatter online, Saweetie took to her X account and wrote, “I hate the ‘nepo baby’ narrative. It spits in the face of the child who grew up barely spending time with her parents because they was too busy hustlin trying to make ends meet. Also, I think ‘Saweetie The College Girl’ would have had her ‘wealthy family’ pay for tuition and boarding so that she could enjoy the social experience of college instead of working 4 jobs to support herself.”

The rapper continued to fire off, “Saying I’m ‘privileged’ ignores the girl who risked her safety renting rooms off of Craigslist because she believed in herself enough to stay in an expensive city while everyone else was telling her to move home because that’s the safe and better ‘financial option.’”

Saweetie went on to explain how despite it all, she followed after her parents and hustled to get what she wanted. She added, “Can’t pay for studio time? No problem. I made car rap videos which is how I got discovered. I’m proud of all the hard work I’ve done/accomplished and will continue to share my story to inspire those who come after me.” Saweetie further posted a ‘Baller Alert Show’ interview clip to her Instagram where she recalled her early days and she captioned the post, “Lookin in the mirror I thank God for what I’m bout to be .”
